Build a Fall Capsule Wardrobe

The seasons are changing. The leaves are changing, the weather is cooler, and the fashion is transitioning to warmer tones and layers. It’s time to transition that summer capsule wardrobe to a fall capsule wardrobe. A capsule wardrobe is a collection of essential clothing pieces that can be mixed and matched to create multiple looks. I typically opt for a seasonal capsule wardrobe. A seasonal capsule wardrobe is a small, limited collection of clothes for a particular time frame. A fall capsule wardrobe typically consists of transitional pieces that will take you from summer, through fall, and into early winter. Some pieces should even fully transition over to your winter capsule wardrobe, as well. I typically keep my seasonal capsule wardrobes at a max of 20-25 pieces.

Fall Capsule Wardrobe

When building a fall capsule wardrobe start with the basics. A closet basic is defined as a simple, streamlined piece with minimal design elements and are able to be mixed and matched easily. Examples are a good pair of jeans, a white tee, a staple knitwear piece, and a blazer are always great staples to have in your closet.

A capsule wardrobe should be made with the most basic items and a few costume pieces. A costume piece can be described as an extreme design element, memorable, trending, and limited use. Keep the costume pieces to 2 or 4 pieces in your capsule wardrobe for any season.

It’s important to include a few versatile pieces that can be dressed up or down. Examples like a pair of well-fitted trousers, or a nice cashmere sweater. A must not forget element when transitioning to a fall wardrobe is the right outerwear for your area. This could include a light jacket or heavy outerwear depending on the climate in your area.

Here is a list of example items to look for when building a fall capsule wardrobe:

  • Coat/Trench
  • Lightweight wool coat
  • Quilted Jacket or Puffer Vest

  • Men’s classic button-down
  • Turtleneck
  • Bodysuit

Remember that your capsule wardrobe should embrace your personal style. The majority of the components of a fall capsule wardrobe list are things you can already find in your own closet, and if you purchase new, you’ll be able to wear them for seasons and years to come. A capsule wardrobe it’s all about honing foundational pieces and combinations that you know work. It’s not about suppressing your own personal style or fitting yourself into a lifelong uniform. I hope this helped you get inspired to create your own fall capsule wardrobe this season. Laters babes!
